Within five years of the campus’ opening, in addition to undergraduate degrees, virtually every department offered graduate degrees. Beginning in 1866, Rutgers was unaffiliated with any formal athletic conference and thus classified as “independent” for eighty years. Other teaching hospitals affiliated with Columbia through the NewYork-Presbyterian network include the Payne Whitney Clinic in Manhattan, and the Payne Whitney Westchester, a psychiatric institute located in White Plains, New York.
