MENUMENU
Olympia ircarodeo Stadium
A 300 kW chiller was used to keep the rink frozen at a consistent temperature. Eighty three years ago, the world took notice of the city of Berlin as they hosted the Olympic Summer Games. We were lucky enough to visit this historic site, which is now used for soccer games, concerts, events and many other things.
Also located there were the Langemarck-Halle ircarodeo and the Bell Tower . The walls were built with sturdy stone from the area of the Lower Alps, and also feature equine sculptures . This consisted of huge halls built under the stands of the Maifeld.
But oftentimes these giant investments are torn down or abandoned, as these photos show. A new Busch Stadium was built shortly after, with some of the new grounds overlapping the old. The original stadium was opened in 1966 and played host to the St. Louis Cardinals for nearly 40 years. The stadium had fallen into disrepair, however, and was knocked down in 2005.
What happened in the rest of eastern Germany also happened in the village on April 22 – the Russians arrived. The last civilians and soldiers had left the village hastily, the bedridden patients were left behind. Normally the rules were such that a soldier who had committed suicide was treated with little regard. There would be no ceremony, and the grave had to come in a separate corner, not with the other soldiers who had been killed with honor in battle. On Saturday, August 22, he was buried in the Invalidenfriedhof in Berlin Mitte, a privilege for prominent figures in the Third Reich.
But on the other side, some countries have done a great job of thinking beyond the 16-day Olympic Games window and of the legacy the games will leave. They have a plan for what these facilities will be as soon as the games are over, giving these Olympic Stadiums a new life and a new purpose. Due to rising costs, it’s getting harder and harder to find hosts for the Olympics, a lot of which is because of the horror stories of abandoned multi-million-dollar facilities.
Sadly this building wasn’t accessible, so we moved on to even more of the apartments. But with the arena undergoing its redesign, and with the place very much, we turned our attention to the apartments and bungalows. On the surface it looks like we’re in a drain, but it’s actually quite high up the side of the arena.
Germany’s proposed stadium for this event was to be located in Charlottenburg, in the Grunewald Forest, to the west of Berlin—thus the stadium was also known as Grunewaldstadion. A horse racing-course already existed there which belonged to the Berliner Rennverein, and even today the old ticket booths survive on Jesse-Owens-Allee. The government of Germany decided not to build in the nearby Grunewald forest, or to renovate buildings that already existed. Because of this desire, they hired the same architect who originally had built the “Rennverein”, Otto March.
And as with most construction sites, there’s very little to see apart from the basic shell littered with builder paraphernalia. But this is the main stadium, and it was commissioned by Adolf Hitler himself, along with luxury apartments for around 4000 athletes. Construction on the stadium began in 1934 and was completed four years later at a cost of $4 million ($68 million in 2016 dollars). It was officially opened on 30 September 1936 by Adolf Hitler who was making his first visit to Berlin after becoming chancellor.
“During Nazi times, there was only one V.I.P. Today, there are several classes of V.I.P.’s.” Marg said he tried to remain faithful to that concept by tucking the skyboxes unobtrusively between the first and second section of seats. Hospitality suites, bars, restaurants and a private parking garage are hidden under the stadium. The above is an abandoned aquatics site from the Rio Olympics. What’s shocking is that many of the photographs featured in this list of the Rio games were only taken some 7 months after they were over.
