What this book is really about is society, and what happens when people are faced with something new and scary, which they may not understand or know how to deal with. It confronts the problem on a personal level through various different characters, a political level and even in terms of class. Wells asks a very important question here and I think the series of events has insight into the human condition and our inability to deal with change, to adapt and to be accepting of those who are different to ourselves. Slightly past the end of the prolific period is a much more obscure work – ‘The Food of the Gods’ – which is today best known for its inspiration of some very bad B-rate horror movies. The work, along with the similarly obscure ‘In the Days of the Comet’ marks an important transition point in Well’s fiction, from the successful scientific romances of his early career to the much less readable and less well known political science fiction of his latter career.

There are some genuinely terrifying scenes (one scene in particular sticks in my mind of giant rats attacking unsuspecting people and one rat scurrying away with a horse in its mouth!) that keep you moving through the book. However the overall story and its writing is rather dated creating a plodding, overly descriptive and drawn out political monologing. The story takes a long time to tell, and the average reader knows how it will play out. While there are plenty of exiting scenes, they are drowned out by heavy political and philosophical discussions that become repetitive. Wells performs this balancing act much better in his other works (including my favourite ‘The Time Machine’ which is the length of a novella), where a clear political message is made, which adds to a fast paced story rather than weighing it down.

This chemical element accelerates physical growth and creates animals that are much bigger than normal. Originally published in 1904, The Food of the Gods by H. G. Wells is less well known than the author’s The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds but it is a highly philosophical and entertaining science fiction novel and one not to be missed. And I’d suggest the SF Masterworks edition since there’s an informative, insightful Introduction by Adam Roberts. There are some really interesting theories in this book that I believe should be researched into greater detail.
